You’re the Hero of Your Own Story. That’s Exactly the Problem.

The single most common positioning mistake small business owners make — and why.

There’s a moment in almost every sales conversation that business owners dread. The prospect leans forward, looking genuinely interested, and asks: “So what makes you different from your competitors?”

And most business owners answer with a list. Awards. Years of experience. Certifications. Their proprietary processes.

In doing that, they commit the single most common positioning mistake in small business: they make themselves the hero of the story.

Here’s the problem. Your customers aren’t looking for a hero to admire. They’re looking for a trusted guide to help them solve their problem. The problem you can help them solve. The moment you start talking about your credentials and achievements, you’ve shifted the spotlight from their challenge to your résumé.

Think about the stories that have moved you most in your life. Maybe your favorite movie. The central character isn’t the expert. It’s the person on the journey. And the most pivotal figures in that story aren’t the heroes either — they’re the guides that help the hero succeed. That mentor who shows up at exactly the right moment with exactly the right wisdom.

In your customers’ stories, they are the hero. You are their trusted guide. The sooner you orient your entire brand around that truth, the faster everything changes.

Your credentials are real. Your experience is legitimate. But leading with them puts you in competition with the customer’s story, not in a conversation about how their lives can be transformed.

The trusted guide who demonstrates understanding wins the client. The hero who lists credentials falls into a comparison trap. Then price becomes the determining factor.
Which one are you?
